The End of Life Strategy (2008) states that bereavement support is fundamentally important in end of life care and beyond. Health and social care workers have a responsibility to understand the impact of bereavement and offer appropriate support.
This series of five study days looks at:
Theories of Grief (day 1)

- demonstrating an understanding of theories of grief
- exploring the application of theories in practice
- discussing the value of these theories in supporting the bereaved
- awareness of the concept of resilience
- understanding how to assess bereavement needs
Supportive Bereavement Care (day 2)
13th May 2010
- developing skills in supporting patients and those close to them who are experiencing loss
- understanding of how grief affects specific groups, for instance children and the cognitively impaired
- exploring strategies to support children in the context of their family
- using a self-reflective approach to deliver effective bereavement care
Cultural and Spiritual Manifestations of Grief (day 3)
27th May 2010
- recognising cultural differences in the grieving process
- awareness of key aspects arising out of, for example, age or gender
- exploring the use of the arts as an expression of grief
- identifying key themes in the representation of bereavement in media and the arts
Hope and Narrative at End of Life (day 4)
17th June 2010
- defining the concept of hope
- describing how you might promote hope at the end of life
- discussing whether hope should be fostered in end of life care
- exploring narrative as a therapeutic tool in end of life care and bereavement
Death Rituals and Funeral Rites (day 5)
1st July 2010
- understanding cultural & religious rituals surrounding dying
- knowing how to arrange a funeral
- understanding the role of the funeral director
- awareness of European regulations
- discussing sources of financial assistance available
This course is suitable for nurses and allied healthcare professionals who regularly encounter individuals experiencing bereavement
Each day runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm at St Catherine’s Education Centre.
Each 5 day course costs £350-00 ~ includes handouts, refreshments and lunch ~ however, it is possible to book individual study days at £75-00 per day.
