Developing Practice in End of Life Care

Health and social care workers are expected to maintain their own professional standards and support colleagues in their practice (NMC 2008. NICE (2004) calls for service evaluation and the use of research in the delivery of palliative care and this has been reinforced by the End of Life Care Strategy (2008) to ensure the highest standard of patient care at the end of life.

This course has been given ReQ status, having been assessed by the Universities of Surrey and Brighton and recognised for its educational quality.  Follow this link for further details

This five day course covers:

Teamworking (day 1)
 27th January 2011

  • describing the nature and characteristics of teams
  • demonstrating an understanding of the functions of a team
  • exploring your role within a team
  • recognising the benefits and difficulties of team working

Managing Groups (day 2)
10th February 2011

  • describing facilitation skills
  • understanding group dynamics 
  • identifying techniques to stimulate discussion
  • exploring ways to develop your self-confidence
  • an opportunity to practice chairing skills

Presentation Skills Workshop (day 3)
3rd March 2011

  • know how to prepare a talk/study session
  • understanding the selection of an appropriate method of delivery
  • describing the use of differing visual aids
  • discussing the value of feedback (both self & others)

Audit & Research in End of Life Care (day 4)
17th March 2011

  • understanding the notion of research & audit - what, why, how
  • describing methods of gathering appropriate evidence through audit
  • discussing how evidence can be used to improve practice
  • discussing ethics in terms of audit & research
  • identifying when you would use research & when you would use audit

Internet Searches & Report Writing (day 5)
31st March 2011

  • defining & refining search terms & strategy
  • know how to ascertain & download the most appropriate information
  • demonstrating searching the NHS Evidence & other databases
  • understanding different report formats & when they are necessary
  • exploring practical tools & tips to influence your reader


This course is suitable for all health and social care workers who continually aim to improve their practice 

Each day runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm at St Catherine’s Education Centre.

Each 5 day course costs £350-00 ~ includes handouts, refreshments and lunch ~ however, it is possible to book individual study days at £75-00 per day.
