St Catherine’s Hospice is a teaching organisation and provides a range of placement opportunities for clinical experience, offering the opportunity to enhance learning about death, dying and bereavement.
Clinical Student Placements
We provide clinical placements for pre- and post-registration students undertaking programmes at the Universities of Surrey and Brighton in both nursing and occupational therapy. The Education Team also deliver teaching in end of life care across the academic levels.
We also teach medical students in conjunction with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School accommodating approximately 30 students per year.
Informal Placements
We offer informal placements for clinicians and allied health professionals of varying lengths. To apply, please follow this link to our on-line form.
Student Counselling Placements
We are able to offer placements to students undertaking counselling courses. Please follow this link to apply but you will find it helpful to contact the Patient and Family Support Team in the first instance on 01293 447343. For professionals who wish to volunteer, please apply online to join us.
The placements are suitable for students who wish to gain experience in working with people who have a life limiting condition, their families and the bereaved.
The next intake for students will be in March 2012, with pre-course interviews in February 2012. We require you to attend an initial training course, and then we will review your suitability for the work at the end of the training, before we will accept you on to the team.
Supervision will be provided free of charge and given in groups which meet fortnightly. We will allow you to record sessions if that is a requirement of your course.
Theological Students and Ordinands Placements
We can offer two short placements a year for ordinands and theological students of any denomination, training for ministry in the church. Placements are normally up to 40 hours in duration and can be done as one or two blocks, or spread over several weeks. We can be flexible and will try to meet your requirements.
