Pain & Symptom Management at the End of Life
This course has now been concluded
A five day course covering: the nature of pain and its assessment; the drug management of pain; the multi-disclinary management of pain; complex symptoms in end of life care; and palliative care emergencies
Principles of End of Life Care
This course has now been concluded
A five day course covering the philosophy of palliative care; end of life conversations; pain and symptom management; loss and grief; and looking after yourself.
Managing Non-Malignant Disease at the End of Life
This course has now been concluded
A five day course covering: neurological diseases - Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Multi-System Atrophy, Parkinson's, etc.; heart failure; renal failure; and respiratory disorders.
Developing Practice in End of Life Care
A five day course covering: teamworking; managing groups; presentation skills workshop; audit & research in end of life care; and internet searches & writing
Psychosocial Skills in End of Life Care
A five day course covering: the key components of psychosocial care; the importance of good communication; core conditions and how these can enhance psychosocial care of patients and those close to them; family systems and their influence on the patient-professional relationship; outcome measures when considering the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions; professional boundaries in the context of psychosocial care; and reflective practice to demonstrate learning in practice
A half day course looking at: why we do audit; how we undertake audit; how the evidence from audit improves practice: and the difference between audit and research.
Syringe Driver Workshop
A one day course looking at: the different syringe drivers in use; the rationale behind their use; common medications and their compatibility; how to set up a syringe driver safely; and ‘troubleshooting’ if difficulties arise.
Death Rituals and Funeral Rites
A one day course looking at: the cultural and religious rituals surrounding dying; how to arrange a funeral; the role of the funeral director; European regulations;sources of financial assistance.
Basic Communication Skills Workshop
A one day course looking at: identifying your strengths as a communicator; understanding the principles of effective communication; recognizing barriers to listening; start to compile a toolkit of different ways to communicate effectively; have the opportunity to practice different techniques in communication.
Visitor Workshops
St Catherine’s Education and Training Centre welcomes a variety of visitors each year. These two-hour workshops will provide the opportunity to: explore the principles of end of life care; meet members of the hospice team; have a tour of St Catherine’s; and meet others who share an interest in end of life care

Intravenous Therapy Workshop
A one day course looking at: indications for intravenous therapy; drug calculations; intravenous access devices including Hickman, Groshung and PICC lines; and practical aspects of administering intravenous additives
A one day course looking at: what is an advanced care plan; when do you need to consider one; how is it introduced?; does it aid decision making; and examining the end of life strategy and mental capacity
Nutrition in End of Life Care
This one day course will consider: issues affecting nutrition in end of life care; assessment of nutritional status; and creative ways to enhance nutritional intake in this patient group
This half day course will consider: the nature of dementia; the impact of dementia on the person, those close to them & the professionals who care for them; and the many ways of communicating with a person who has dementia
This day will consider: how to establish and work within appropriate boundaries; how to manage difficult situations and emotions; and working with people experiencing loss
First Aid at Work
This course has now concluded but will be run again in 2010
This four day course will lead to an HSE accredited first aid certificate and will consider: definitions of ‘first aid’ and the responsibility of the first aider; primary survey and recovery position; basic resuscitation; bleeding, special wounds and unconsciousness; recognition of injuries to bones, joints and the spine; and burns, eye injuries, poisons and extremes of temperature
