End of Life Care Issues

Under the leadership of Professor Mike Richards, the Department of Health has devised an End of Life Strategy which is designed to set a standard of care for adults dying in England and Wales. Here are brief details of the Strategy and links to the Department of Health website.

The Strategy is designed to ensure that all dying patients receive the best of care whether receiving palliative care or acute care, building on the work of hospices and the various care frameworks, including:

The Liverpool Care Pathway

The Gold Standards Framework

Preferred Priorities of Care

End of Life Care Programme (takes you to the End of Life care website)

In the autumn of 2009 the national press ran some articles on the Liverpool Care Pathway and how dying patients are cared for:

Providing care and support to people with progressive life-threatening illness and support to their families, friends and carers in Mid Sussex, Crawley, Horsham and South-East Surrey.
