How often will I need to come to the Hospice? This is voluntarily negotiated. We operate a roster system and volunteers are fitted into the rosters. We try to accommodate the number of hours you wish to commit. Most duties are only a few hours each week or fortnightly, or even once a month. Others roles require half a day or a full day. Your commitment can be as little as a few hours per month or as much as you like.
Is it possible to be a volunteer even though I cannot regularly commit myself?
There is an alternative to a regular commitment. We operate a ‘reserve bank’ which is a vital part of the organisation of the rosters. These volunteers fill the spaces caused by illness or holidays so we are not continually calling on the same people. Those that commit their valuable time on a regular basis can still feel free to have a holiday, take time out and give themselves space for pursuing hobbies and other interests etc!
Will I receive any training? All volunteers receive training in fire and manual handling and any specific training required by individual departments, for example the kitchen, volunteers receive training relevant to their role such as “basic food hygiene” training.
Am I too old to apply?
No! But volunteers are required to have a Doctor’s fitness certificate and there are age restrictions for certain duties such as driving.
