David Gold raises more than £21,000 for local hospice
Caterham resident, David Gold has raised more than £21,000 to support his local hospice, St Catherine’s Hospice.
As part of his fundraising, each year, David, who is a long standing supporter of our hospice, opens his private home and gardens at The Chalet to raise money. His two most recent openings (14 and 21 April) have helped raise even more money for us.
Over the last two weekends, David, who is Chairman of West Ham United FC, has treated visitors to a fantastic day out. His garden at The Chalet is set in the middle of a 55 acre golf course and gave visitors lots to enjoy and explore. This included a stunning display of Koi fish in ornamental ponds, ancient woodlands and planted terraces where people could see beautiful roaming deer.
David also displayed his impressive fleet of cars including a Phantom Rolls Royce and a limited edition Bentley Blue Train and had his helicopter on display. Alongside these displays, people enjoyed live entertainment, admired birds of prey, and tried their luck at fundraising stalls including a stall run by local hospice supporters, Tandridge Friends. BBC Radio were even present at The Chalet on Sunday 21 April talking to David and Sophie who manages our Events team as part of their popular BBC Dig It! radio programme.
After the varied activities, visitors relaxed and enjoyed tea, coffee and homemade cakes. Many people made the most of the Spring sunshine by opting for an ice cream from the vintage ice cream van too.
David said, “I’m thrilled to learn that I’ve raised more than £21,000 for St Catherine’s over the years. I open my garden each year to support the hospice because they do such brilliant work in our community. All terminally ill local people should be able to have St Catherine’s support at the end of their lives. This is my way of helping the hospice to reach as many people as possible. To hear that St Catherine’s currently only has the funds to care for one in three people who need their expert care makes me even more driven to support them.”
Keely Bicknell, Philanthropy Officer at St Catherine’s said, “We’re really grateful to David for his ongoing support. The money he’s raised is enough to fund three days of community care allowing our nurses to care for people in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes. Our community care is a huge part of the work we do as 8 in 10 people we care for are looked after in the community, including in Caterham. I’d like to thank David and Lesley for their generosity in hosting another successful Open Garden event for us.”
