Five stars for food safety in hospice kitchen

News and Blog

St Catherine’s Hospice is thrilled that their kitchen, in Malthouse Road, Crawley, has maintained its five star food hygiene rating after a recent visit from Environmental Health. Despite the kitchen being one of the hospice’s busiest areas, St Catherine’s catering team are diligent about working in a safe environment; something that was acknowledged by the visiting officer who commended the team for their professionalism and commitment to food safety.

Catering for individual patients’ needs, St Catherine’s catering team also provide food and homemade cakes for the hospice’s public coffee shop. Now, the hospice is encouraging the local community to visit to enjoy the tempting treats on offer. With the catering team’s recent five star endorsement, there’s never been a better time to treat yourself to tea and cake!

Nestled just inside the hospice, St Catherine’s coffee shop offers people a great place to relax, with a bright conservatory and tranquil, landscaped gardens. Run by three employed staff and supported by volunteers the coffee shop’s reasonably priced menu includes a mouth-watering selection of jacket potatoes, sandwiches, panini’s, salads and daily specials. It is also the proud owner of a Gold Standard Eat Out, Eat Well award, which recognises the healthy menus on offer.

Last year, over 3,800 sandwiches, over 5,000 hot food items and 11,759 beverages were served to visitors in the coffee shop, with all money generated helping to fund patient care.

All services are free to patients and their families but cost more than £17,000 a day to provide. With less than a third of the hospice’s running costs coming from the NHS, for the rest St Catherine’s rely on the generosity and support of the local community.

By supporting St Catherine’s coffee shop, you’ll be helping ensure the hospice can continue to be there to care for local people. Now, there’s a guilt free reason to eat cake!
