‘Lotto’ reasons to celebrate as hospice Lottery turns 18!

News and Blog

St Catherine’s Hospice lottery is turning 18 and to celebrate, the charity is calling on members of the local community to help make the milestone extra special by signing up to support them.

Over the last 18 years, a whole ‘lotto’ fun’s been had by more than 38,000 supporters, who’ve each played an important part in helping fund St Catherine’s expert end of life care. Now’s your chance to join them!

The saying goes, ‘you’ve got to be in it to win it’ and that’s true for Pat Talbot, who won £1,000 in December 2015. With personal experience of St Catherine’s, after her son-in-law was cared for by the hospice, Pat explains what winning meant to her. “I’ve been supporting St Catherine’s lottery for about three years and was thrilled to hear I’d won! I’d had a difficult year so it was a lovely thing to happen. As well as helping with Christmas expenses and savings, I treated myself to a handbag with my winnings.” She added: “Supporting St Catherine’s lottery is definitely worth doing. It’s an easy way to support your local hospice with the added bonus of possibly winning a prize.”

Many members sign up after speaking with a St Catherine’s lottery canvasser like Andrew Berry. He said: “One of my most memorable visits was when someone told me “you bought my dog.” I wasn’t sure what they meant but it turned out they’d won £1,000 on St Catherine’s lottery which had paid for their dog! Another person had won £25 then gone onto win £1,000, of which they donated half back to the hospice.”

Since starting in 1998, St Catherine’s lottery has raised more than nine million pounds and helped hundreds of terminally ill patients and their families. Today, the lottery is very close to paying for an entire day of St Catherine’s care.

Zoe Dolding, Individual Giving Co-ordinator at St Catherine’s said: “We’re really proud of all that the lottery has achieved in the last 18 years and look forward to continuing to grow over the next 18.”

Mandie Pastars, Lottery Assistant at St Catherine’s added: “We’re lucky to have fantastic and loyal lottery supporters and volunteers and would like to say a big birthday thank you for their continuing support.”

The lottery costs just £1 a week and every entry stands a chance of winning one of 19 prizes, including the £1,000 first prize. Currently, more than 16,500 members enter the weekly draws and with the chance to win some extra cash while supporting your local hospice there really is everything to play for!
