An update on our former hospice on Malthouse Road
We wanted to share an important milestone in the story of our former hospice on Malthouse Road as we know it’s a place that holds deep meaning for so many families across our community.
For 40 years, Malthouse Road was the home of St Catherine’s Hospice. It was where countless families entrusted our specialist teams with the care of their loved ones, and where around 40,000 people received comfort, dignity and specialist support at the end of their lives.
In December 2023, we moved to our new hospice home in Pease Pottage.
While this marks a new chapter for the land that served our community so profoundly, the spirit of care will live on. The legacy of St Catherine’s will continue to be honoured there as Preferred Homes plans to create a memorial garden on the site so that the community has a space to visit where they can remember and reflect.
Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of St Catherine’s Hospice said:
“Our hospice on Malthouse Road was more than just a building, it became a place of comfort, compassion, and cherished memories for many in our community. We are heartened to see that the site will continue to serve a meaningful purpose, supporting social care and the local community under its new ownership. It’s reassuring to know that the spirit of care and support will live on there. At St Catherine’s we continue our work from our new hospice in Pease Pottage and we remain committed to providing specialist end of life care to the people of Crawley and the wider area. Anyone whose loved one was cared for at our former site is always warmly welcome to visit us at our new home, it would be a privilege to host you.”
