Lauren Parker took on our Step Up Challenge in May last year, raising money to support local terminally ill people and their families. Her fundraising efforts were recognised with a prestigious Blue Peter badge. Here she tells us more:
“During May 2020, I decided to raise money for St Catherine’s by doing a stair climb the height of a mountain I’d been studying in my school lessons. The mountain was called Siula Grande in Peru which is 6,344m high and I managed to climb the same height in a month. I had to go up the whole flight of stairs at my house about 80 times every day.
My family were very supportive. My sister made a playlist for me to listen to, and my parents helped to motivate me. I raised £312! I’m very grateful to people that I managed to achieve that amount.
After the challenge I was watching Blue Peter on CBBC and I wanted to apply for a badge. The reason I applied for a badge is so that I could share my story about a struggling hospice that needed more donations. I wrote a two page letter to Blue Peter explaining what I did and why I did it. Getting a Blue Peter badge was like a second, big achievement and I felt very proud. ”
