Our new exercise bike is benefitting patient workouts

News and Blog

We’ve recently added a recumbent exercise bike to our hospice gym, giving patients who are physically able the opportunity to enjoy a full body workout.

Whilst our existing MOTOmed bike can be used by anyone, it’s passive function* is primarily designed for those with neurological conditions and reduced lower limb strength.

The new recumbent exercise bike is a single, integrated unit and supports people with more physical strength to stay active, whilst encouraging progression.

Kindly funded by two generous supporters, the bike is already having huge benefits for those who use our gym.

Dorota, Senior Physiotherapist, said:

“This new and exciting piece of equipment is a great addition to our circuit exercise classes, drop-in gym, and one-to-one outpatient sessions.

“The bike offers more of a challenging workout for people’s legs, and the ability to adjust the resistance helps improve stamina and strength. The bike’s recumbent position is designed to reduce tension across the back. Patients that have used the bike report that they feel they worked harder overall but without compromising on comfort.”

Beth, Therapy Technician, added:

“It’s really rewarding to see patients enjoying using the new bike and to share in their pride as their strength and fitness improves week by week.”

Lang comes to our drop-in gym and has been using the new exercise bike. He said:

“I have been lucky enough to utilise the gym facilities for the last 12 months and the latest addition of the new recumbent bike has benefited me greatly. I find the new bike much more comfortable as it allows accurate positioning for my leg length and provides more support for my back. The screen gives real time information about my workout and makes me work harder overall. The bike has become my favourite piece of equipment in the gym. I always walk away feeling really good after a workout at the hospice.”

If you or someone you know is interested in using our hospice gym, please speak with your care team or email stch.wellbeing@nhs.net.

*The passive function in the MOTOmed uses a motor to move the user’s legs or arms when they are unable to do so themselves.
