Our Pets as Therapy (PAT) volunteers

News and Blog

Volunteers Week seems the perfect time to share that after a break due to COVID we’re delighted to be able to welcome some four-legged friends back to the hospice!

Liz, our Wellbeing and Community Development Lead said,

“We have 3 Pets as Therapy (PAT) registered dogs poised and ready to return with their human volunteers to bring a smile to the faces of our patients, visitors and members of staff.

Once a week there will be tails wagging once more on our wards and in our newly opened Living Well Centre.

Interacting with the PAT dogs can help people to relax and feel calm, provide comfort and can be a welcome distraction. The human PAT volunteers all want to share the joy that their dog brings them and encourage everyone to come and say hello. Our reception team are all set with treats at the ready!”

Stella, who volunteers with her dog Bertie told us,

“We both look forward to volunteering at the hospice and I’m excited to be returning. Bertie always knows what he is here for, and I think he can sense that he has to be calm and relaxed with patients.

I enjoy seeing people light up when they see Bertie and I hope it’s a little bright spark in their day!”
