Adventurous supporters trek the Saghro Mountains

News and Blog

Throughout November, 33 of our most adventurous supporters trekked across the Saghro Mountains in Morocco to raise vital funds for our hospice.

Split into two groups, the challengers each trekked for five days, covering more than 434 miles and over 4386ft of elevation. With sections of steep incline and rocky terrain, the trek was challenging but the explorers persevered.

They raised a fantastic £146,000 for people in Sussex and Surrey who are faced with death and dying. St Catherine’s Hospice relies on voluntary fundraising to provide palliative and end of life care throughout the year and we are incredibly grateful for our amazing community and their continued support in raising these vital funds.

Emma Butler, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, expertly led the first group of trekkers alongside Susie Mockridge, Community Clinical Nurse Specialist. Emma has shared how she found the trip:

“It was mostly warm and dry during the day but incredibly cold at night – we all went to bed wearing woolly hats and thermals!

“On day three there was a freak hailstorm. A flash flood warning was then put in place, meaning we were unable to camp. Two families from the local village kindly vacated their homes to give us somewhere to sleep – reminding us that kindness and generosity extends far beyond our community at home. All the boys were in one room and all the girls in another for a big sleepover! Whilst it was a change to our original plan, the trekkers took it in their stride, fulling embracing the opportunity.

“Everyone I trekked with was incredibly kind and encouraging. They got on fantastically well and supported each other whenever things got a bit challenging or if someone was struggling. Their shared experiences have helped them to build really strong connections and some of them have already booked their next big walking challenge together and organised a reunion dinner in January.”

A big thank you to everyone who took part in the trek.
