Creating Memories That Endure Forever

News and Blog

This week we have a guest blog from Rosie Buckley, a freelance writer with a passion for writing and a love for exploring diverse topics. Here she shares ways to make timeless memories with family members while we still can.

“Creating exciting memories can be comforting to look back on at times when we don’t feel our best. Spending quality time with and showing your appreciation for the people you love and care about can make memories which last a lifetime.

Ask About Their Past

Get to know more about your loved one’s life. Ask about their past and world events they’ve lived through that you haven’t. This is an exciting first-hand insight into history. Ask about their personal experiences and any stories they have about family members when they were younger. If you want to do this in an interactive way, you could interview them. By writing down or filming answers, you can look back on them later in life. Don’t forget to ask them if they have an old photo album lying around anywhere. They may have photos from when you were younger or from before you were born that you’ve never seen before.

Go Somewhere Together

Leaving the house and going out to explore can create some amazing memories. Start by asking them if there’s anywhere they want to go. If they’re unsure, then you can make some suggestions. Going to a museum, visiting the zoo or watching a film at the cinema are all options to consider. If you’re still not sure, you could visit a memorable place together. This might be your favourite childhood park or enjoying a favourite ice cream you always used to get.

Spend Quality Time Together

When spending time with your loved one, especially if they’re elderly, make yourself present. Put your phone away and remove anything which might distract you. Unfortunately, loneliness in the elderly is very prevalent. Your loved one may live alone, be retired or have lost close friends and family over the years. If you’re willing to be completely present and listen to what they have to say, then they’ll feel appreciated. Living in the moment can create unforgettable memories.

Spend Time Inside

If your loved one isn’t feeling very active, there’s plenty to do inside as well. You could play a board game together or watch a film. You could even try creating something. This could be; making jewellery, building Lego, shooting a short film, or baking in the kitchen. Ask them if there’s anything they’d like to make, they might have some fun ideas!

Record and Save Memories Where Possible

Living in the moment is important, but taking photos and videos means you can look back on them in the future. If you have any voicemails from your family member, save them in your phone. Make sure you hold on to any birthday cards or letters they’ve given you as well. Look over anything you’ve saved with your family member as it may make them smile.

Show Them You Care

Remind your relative that you love them. You could treat them to a homemade gift such as a Victoria sponge cake or a story you’ve written. Don’t worry about expensive gifts because simple presents often go a long way too.

It doesn’t have to be a gift either; there are lots of ways to show people you care. Simply saying that you love them will bring a smile to their face. If you don’t see them often, keep in contact over the phone. Regular phone calls or texts show that you’re willing to check in on them and want to hear from them.

Hopefully this article has given you a few ideas of how you can create memories with your loved ones. It’s easy to take forget how short life is, so live your life to the fullest and start making more memories which will last a lifetime!
